‘Half Of A Yellow Sun’ Premiers In Lagos As Chiwetel Ejiofor Dispels Rumors of Abandoning Nigeria

The screen adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’ was yesterday premiered at the Silverbird Cinemas, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The movie which captures some of the happenings during the Nigerian civil war features a cross section of top Hollywood and Nollywood stars like Chiwetel Ejifor(2012,12 Years a slave), Thandie Newton(The Pursuit of Happyness, Mission: Impossible II), Hakeem Kae-Kazim(Hotel Rwanda, Last Flight to Abuja), Genevieve Nnaji(Ije, Silent Scandals) and O.C Ukeje(Hoodrush, Alan Poza). Others are veterans; Onyeka Onwenu, Tina Mba, Gloria Young and Zack Orji.
‘Half of a Yellow Sun’ which had earlier gotten a special presentation at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival is the brainchild of dreadlocks wearing Novelist, Playwright and director, Biyi Bandele.

The premier had an array of stars in attendance and was followed by a press conference at Wheat Baker in Ikoyi. Stars who joined Biyi Bandele for the Press conference were Chiwetel Ejiofor, OC Ukeje, Tina Mba, Gloria Young, Reginald Ofodile and Naya Amobi.

’12years a Slave’ star, Chiwetel Ejiofor also responded to certain questions pertaining his nationality, his stance on gays and the division in Nigeria. He said he doesn’t have a reservation against gays but he does not appreciate our being divided in race, gender and tribe. “Although I was born in London, I am proud to have a Nigerian background”, the Oscar nominee added.
